Find Your Niche, Find Your Business

By Jason Pearson

If you are just starting out in internet marketing you have probably heard the same advice over and over, you need to find a niche for your business. If you are new and have heard this advice and have chosen to follow said advice then you have already made a wise decision.

Everyday thousands of people dive into online markets looking for their piece of the pie. The sad thing is they choose the large markets that are already totally saturated. They are the people who dive into a swimming pool already full of people. Sometime there just is not anymore room for one more person with little floaties on their arms. Just like the person in the pool wondering why there is no room to swim, is the new online marketer wondering why his business is not taking off.

If you are reading this wondering what is a niche, and why is it so important, let me give you the answer. Webster's definition of a Niche is : a place or position suitable or appropriate for a person or thing: to find one's niche in the business world. A distinct segment of a market.

The popular choice of markets as of late is Internet Marketing. It seems the reasonable choice considering this is how the big wigs are making their money. Obviously it is a money making market. Because it is such a popular market is exactly why it is the most dangerous. The market is saturated with more people who likely have more experience than you. A new person to the Internet Market has little to no chance of standing out in the crowd. It would be a where's Waldo page, and the new guy is the tiny figure behind the rock, behind the house, under the bridge.

Susan Ward, on About.com defines internet Marketing as "The strategies that are used to market a product or service online, marketing strategies that include such search engines optimization and search engines submission, copywriting that encourages site visitors to take action, web site design strategies, online promotions, reciprocal linking and email marketing." A new entapernuaer online has little chance of knowing enough about any of these to be a success in this market. It would be a grade school athlete challenging an Olympic gold medalist to a race.

Most people think bigger is better, this is not always true. It is possible to be a success in internet marketing if you think smaller, think Niche. Just from Susan Ward's definition you can comprise a list of the following Niches.

Marketing, Search engine Optimization, copywriting, Web site design, promotion, Linking, Email Marketing.

Even if you are one of the lucky few to have a good understanding any of these Niches, you will find yourself up against a crowd of competing internet marketers in the same Niche. It is a common problem when choosing a Niche with such a broad boundary. If you are not dead set in such a broad niche, look a little deeper to the narrower areas in the large picture. You may find something you are better suited at.

Wordtracker is one of the best resources to finding a suitable niche. Using Wordtracker is easy. You can break internet marketing down to a number of other marketing niches. Simply type in internet marketing and watch all of the new ideas pop up. Many of them you had probably never considered. By opening your mind up you could find a new market in the wider market you didn't know was there. If you still are not satisfied, use those keywords that came up as keywords to a new search, and continue to narrow down your search until you have found the perfect fit for you.

If you remember a successful business always boils down to providing product for the consumers demand. Find the right niche for you and room for it in the market and you will find a successful business at your fingertips.
