Website Marketing 101

By Jason Pearson

Awareness of your site is key to your websites success. Increasing traffic to your site is simple if you know a few key techniques to make this happen. Some of these techniques may seem obvious, but others require knowledge and know-how that will result in a boost to your website presence.

There are thousands of websites that are simply directories of other websites. Some larger sites will have lists on nearly every topic, while smaller sites will concentrate on one particular subject, such as books, toys, health and wellness, etc. Find out if these sites have an option to submit your URL for free, if not, there may be a small fee to do so. Either way, you'll increase exposure of your website, because every link back to your site will tell search engines that your site is important enough to list high during a search.

Writing articles on a subject related to your website is a great way to point visitors to your site. If you specialize in organic foods, you might write articles on the benefits of consuming organic products. You can then submit your article to article websites, which are used by others to borrow information that they will use on their website. When they borrow your material, or just a portion of it, they will also take along a link to your website.

Most visitors find websites by using a search engine, therefore, it is a good idea to make sure that your URL can be found in all the main search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.). Simply search for your URL, and if you find it, then great! If not, immediately submit your website information to the search engines.

A great way to get the word out about your website is by participating in online forums and chatrooms. This may seem like a tremendous waste of time, and you may be tempted to go about it using 'spam'. Unfortunately, this approach rarely garners any serious attraction to your website, because people see it as pushy and annoying. It is better to take your time, participate in conversations, especially those where you can give answers to questions. This will demonstrate your expertise in your area, and help you build a base of potential customers. While doing this, it is also a good idea to create a 'signature' for the bottom of your posts with a link back to your website, and you can use this signature in regular emails also.

Taking the time and initiative to spread the word about your website is an important part of your websites success. These techniques can help you in this endeavor.
